Ice Breaker Activities?

I teach first and second grade in an interdistrict magnet school. We have a step up day at the end of the year and I was wondering if anyone had any good icebreaker activities to use with them?

  1. pass around a roll of toilet paper, and have the students rip off as many sheets as they like. in the end, they have to tell the class a number of facts about themselves, depending on how many sheets they have.
  2. 1. Make a list of famous couples (ex: Mickey & Minnie, Donald & Daisy, Shaggy & Scooby, etc) 2. On post it notes, you will write down all names 3. Each child will receive one post it note and place it on their forehead (sounds silly but kids love silly!!) NOTE: DO not let them see who they are 4. Children will now try to help each other to find their "other half." ***Remember, their fellow classmates cannot TELL them who they are. Rather, they must describe.*** HAVE FUN!!
  3. Buy those round colored dots in 5 different colors. Put them on the students forehead and tell them they need to get into groups with students who have the same color sticker....the catch.....they are not allowed to talk!! It's really fun to see how creative they get.
  4. Choose a category such as: shoes: high heels, tennis shoes, flip flops, boots vehicles: truck, van, VW bug, convertible vacation spots: ocean, mountains, city, country activities: read, watch TV, go to a game, ride bike cartoons: Spongebob, Popeye, Pokemon, Teletubbies animals: dog, cat, fish, snake etc., etc., etc. Be creative! Make pictures to represent each item of the category. Post the pictures in the four corners of the room. Tell students to choose the picture that most represents them and go to that corner to form a group. Have them take turns in the group telling why they chose that--was it because of something they've done, they have, they are good at, they wish, etc. This will get the kids talking to one another and learning about one another. This works with adults just as well as it works with kids. After doing two or three categories and moving into several different groups, the ice should be breaking up pretty well!
