How can I be more outgoing with my coworkers?

What are ways to start conversations with coworkers? I just started a new job and I want to make friends at work, but I'm naturally a pretty shy person except for dumb stuff like 'Where do we keep the coffee filters?' any ideas?

1. You have to force your self to talk. Whenever a group of people are talking (particularly sharing personal anecdotes) get involved. Eventually as you learn more about your co-workers, and they learn more about you communication will become more natural. Remember, very few people think what they have to say is interesting. So you will judge your self much more harshly than others do.
