Would you quit a job you hated and got no respect at?

I currently work as an admin while I finish graduate school. I've stuck it out for 2 years after numerous times of almost quitting. I will have to quit this job over the summer anyway to finish up my classes and also start student teaching in september. I hated this job from the get-go, butted heads with my boss over him pulling a bait and switch with this position and do not fit in at all with my coworkers. I tried many times but we're just different people. The office atmoshphe is very snobby and pretentious and the only way to get liked by any of the higher ups is to kiss behind which I don't do. I'm not good with small talk and am just quiet that's me. I get no respect from my boss either who treats me like I'm an idiot and I've overheard him making comments about me behind my back. I make good money but get given no work and get no respect. The only cons are that I can use my vacation days freely, don't get in troubl if I'm late, and my boss bascially don't care what I do lol. The peoople in my group only acknoweldge me if they need something, ie letting me kow it's someone's birthday and to get a birthday cake for them when I'm not friendly with any of them. My family doesn't quite get how much I hate this place and all I hear is oh the money. Last week as I was leaving I said goodbye to a coworker, I know he heard me and he said nothing back meanwhile this is the same person I was told to put together a collection for and buy a gift for his new kid. I have enough money saved to get by for a few months and since this won't be my career and I will be teaching in about a year or so I would rather just be a waitress or take any ole job considering I was gonna be quitting this one soon anyway. For once I want to be happy. What should I do?

  1. Heck ya!! Ditch it!!
  2. make sure you can cover yourself but be happy
  3. quit, they won't care, neither should you.
  4. You question was WAAAY too long for anyone to read the details. I'm thinking, if you wrote ALL THIS at work...how much work do you get DONE? The way you're treated may be due to your productivity, or lack of it.
  5. yes I would because you only have one life so make it fun!
  6. Don't feel like reading this but to answer your question,YES I WOULD LEAVE!

  8. You can make happiness anywhere. Jobs are not all cupcakes and icing. In this economic climate, you should be happy to have a job. A big company who supplies to us just fired 3 people who have been there for 10 yrs. So, be fore warned, you probably will just get a worse job/less pay if you quit.
  9. if you've tried every resource you can think of in order to stay... but now work 'keeps you up at night', or 'you're afraid to go to work', or ' it's causing some detriment to you.... then Quit.
  10. hey if it makes you happy, do it..... as you can see, money doesn't bring happiness....
  11. yes do what makes you happy.
  12. i was in the same situation. Overworked and unappreciated. Left admin, and now they really miss me. Just look for a job which fulfills ur needs. Admin work is good money but with a lot of the above. Good luck.
  13. Well I hated my job too and I wished so bad I would just get fired or something so I could find something else. Wish granted...I was let go and I thought I would find another job instantly. That was in June and it is now December and I can't find anything in my field making anywhere near what I was making at my old job. Times are tough and finding a teaching job is very competitive. I would keep the job and try to get by without pulling your hair out. Find some way to cope with the job. Companies are paying less and with another job it may not be as leiant as your current job. You may have money saved up for a few months time, but what if you don't get a job in that time? What if you run out of money? Are you in a situation where money won't matter, or do you have bills that need to get paid?
  14. It sounds like the loss of an income could become an issue for you at some point. You have endured it this long what's 6 more months. I feel that it is important to like what you are doing. I changed jobs after 32 years of service because of changes that occurred after a buyout. If you can survive on a lower paying job that you like then go for it.
  15. awwww poor you =( - i don't particularly like my job either - though i only work part time...i push trolleys - and it gets really cold out.. But i'm a student and need the money - every pound is gold dust! Anyway i think you should quit straight away - from the way you put your question you sound like an honest and intelligent person...as everyone says life's too short! I'm sure you can get any job - but wouldn't you rather have a job - maybe not so much money...but which you enjoy getting up for - rather than a job you hate - and no one appreciates you or what you do? So good luck to you and getting where you belong! - in a job where people actually know your name! Student teaching sounds a hella of a lot funner.
  16. Hell yeah! If the job sucks then have a talk with the boss and see if you can get some "temporary leave" for about 3 months even if you feel like showing him your middle finger and going home. If you're polite enough then you can go back if needed and you shouldn't be much worse off. It gives you a bit of time to prove something else. You've got to stay true to yourself anyway.
  17. One of the best things I did was quit the job from hell and found the job from heaven with people that are intelligent, decent, honest, and have integrity ... I had to believe I was worth it. Just thinking about spending 8 hours with people I do not get along with gives me a stomach ache.
  18. Now is not the time. Keep your job. Just get your paycheck and use your vacation days and screw everyone else. Don't consider it a job, consider it a paycheck. Don't do anything above and beyond what is expected of you. If you quit, you would have a hard time finding another job. Just wait until your classes make you quit. Saving money is a priority.
  19. I read the whole question and I agree with what you say about quiting the....., But he pulled a B&S on you and I don't think YOU should let that slide at all, I may just be 18 but don't let age be a fooler for you, I have been through some of that.
  20. As long as you have other options, then sure...quit! Just make sure you line up another job first.
  21. Well since the next semester of school is in what, a few more weeks or so and for your sanity, you should proably go ahead and let it go. You are about to start a new chapter in your life and at least you have something to fall back on (education and a new/better career soon). I am in school too but I have about two more years left since I go part time. I wish you the best and Happy Holiday's Check out my question if you have time; http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsY8yRe8sXiKq1yeM2Z2mxjsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081211080323AAaUUtb
  22. There are a number of people that will gladly take your job if you leave. Contrary to the advice you are getting from others I advise you stay. You have a perfect situation here - a training opportunity. My kids are all teachers. They face all this all the time in the teaching profession. Politics are a way of life. They deal with poor management, angry and unreasonable parents and their undisciplined children. If you can survive and thrive in this negative environment you might be able to be a good teacher. If you can't you might want to skip teaching because it has all the elements you seem to hate.
  23. You want to go in to teaching have you considered getting a CDL with Passenger endorsement with school bus endorsement, School systems will provide the training. School bus drivers are in short supply and it also get you better consideration in the job market after you get your teaching job. It is a plus as in emergency you can. help out at the bus Barn
  24. I would say continue working at this job even if you hate it. A lot of people are being laid off and now is not the time to be job hunting no matter how you feel about your position. Like me, I wish I had a full time job right now, but no one is hiring at this time. My hours are so crappy at work being part time and never being able to make ends meet, but at least I am working until the storm blows over. Just try to socialize with these people even if you don't want to. By middle of next year, I do hope that things get better, but only time will tell how long we are in the recession.
