What influences in your own cultural context might possibly explain your reactions to a novel?

- Maybe, like if someone has a certaint religion they might hate a book like overly religous christians who hate books with magic like harry potter and such thinking that they teach them witch craft. Is that similar to what you mean? If so I agree.
- Religion, gender, sex (different than gender), sexual orientation, heritage, economic standing, pretty much everything that makes us different from the next person, right down to personal experience.
- Here's what I believe and I could be completely off but when people choose a novel they usually do so because it interests them for one reason or another. Usually it's because they identify with something in the storyline, even if they're not always aware of it. The result is that they tend to relate to one of the characters in the book (usually on of the main characters but not always) Now brings the question of where are interests come from. I think in part we are born with certain inate interests and abilities that over time are shaped by our experiences. Those experiences help to shape our views and beliefs systems and in most cases they tend to follow the views and belief systems of the people around us, which would be our cultural context. Our perceptions are built by our experiences and they are also why we react the way we do to everything, including novels.
